Welcome To Mathias Township!

Mathias Township with a population of 554 encompasses 72 square miles and is located in southwestern Alger County in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. The eastern three quarters of the Township is comprised primarily of the Hiawatha National Forest, the Escanaba River State Forest and Commercial Forest Lands all of which are open to the public for a variety of four season recreational opportunities. The western part of the Township is a mix of farmland and forest. The Township is flanked by two major rivers: the Whitefish River on the west and the Sturgeon River on the east. There are several lakes and streams, as well, within the Township.

Trenary which lies at the western edge of the Township is the Township’s only village and is nearly equidistant from Munising, Marquette and Escanaba which are easily reached via U.S. Highway 41 and State Highway M-67. Trenary is bisected by State Highway M-67 and lies just over one-half mile east of U.S. Highway 41. The majority of the Township’s residents reside in or near Trenary.

The Township is primarily located within the Superior Central school district with the school itself being located 11 miles north of the village of Trenary.
